Day Services

Preparing for Cook-Out In 1989, West Bay developed an innovative alternative to the traditional work activity centers that were available to Rhode Islanders with developmental disabilities. Initially, 6 people left their regional work center to get involved in the typical day-to-day events and activities that we all do in our communities. Our goal is to provide meaningful community experiences and full inclusion of disabled persons in their own communities. Our objectives include utilizing local resources and providing varied integrated experiences to enhance learning opportunities while honoring each individual’s interests and choices.

Pet Therapy The day activity program offers supports to 92 individuals in West Bay’s group homes but also offers day services to disabled individuals who reside at home with their families or guardians. Typically, day activities are based from the individual homes, although a small group of individuals engage in day activities from the West Bay office. Daily schedules are individualized and include: volunteerism, part time employment, self employment, leisure and social opportunities, physical exercise, pursuit of hobbies and personal interests, as well as socializing with other members of the community.

We believe that using community resources such as libraries, places of worship, YMCA facilities, local grocery stores, mall shops, and RIPTA bus services is conducive to fuller membership and interdependence in a person’s community. We work toward this by providing necessary supports while respecting the individual’s choices and preferences.

There is no place a person with disabilities cannot go, when given the appropriate support.
